The original amino acid side-chains are discarded, and the helical backbones are extended to span the full length of a membrane.

An alternative approach to physics-based energy terms is using statistics from known structures to derive potential functions (114). The first version of the scoring function in the Rosetta program for structural modeling, and the design was developed for protein structure prediction (115) and was a statistical potential function derived from structures in the PDB (16, 116) using Bayesian statistics (35). To adapt Rosetta for the protein design, all-atom detail and physics-based terms were incorporated (33, 38), which in turn led to considerable advances in both protein structure prediction and protein design (82, 117).

Despite this progress, a general deep-learning framework for protein design that enables solution of a wide range of design challenges, including de novo binder design and design of higher-order symmetric architectures, has yet to be described. Diffusion models10,11 have had considerable success in image and language generative modelling but limited success when applied to protein modelling, probably due to the complexity of protein backbone geometry and sequence–structure relationships. We demonstrate the power and generality of the method, called RoseTTAFold diffusion (RFdiffusion), by experimentally characterizing the structures and functions of hundreds of designed symmetric assemblies, metal-binding proteins and protein binders. The accuracy of RFdiffusion is confirmed by the cryogenic electron microscopy structure of a designed binder in complex with influenza haemagglutinin that is nearly identical to the design model.
Urry and colleagues later designed elastin-like fibrous peptides based on rules on sequence composition. Following the development of these computational tools, great success has been achieved over the last 30 years in protein design. There is great hope that the design of new proteins, small and large, will have uses in biomedicine and bioengineering.
To generate a new protein backbone, we first initialize random residue frames and RFdiffusion makes a denoised prediction. Each residue frame is updated by taking a step in the direction of this prediction with some noise added to generate the input to the next step. The nature of the noise added and the size of this reverse step is chosen such that the denoising process matches the distribution of the noising process (Supplementary Methods and Extended Data Fig. 2a). RFdiffusion initially seeks to match the full breadth of possible protein structures compatible with the purely random frames with which it is initialized, and hence the denoised structures do not initially seem protein-like (Fig. 1c, left).
Scoring functions in the computational protein design aim to distinguish designs with desired properties from those not adopting the intended structures and functions, typically by identifying low-energy sequence–structure combinations. Early protein energy functions (110) used harmonic terms for bond energies and a Lennard–Jones potential for van der Waals interactions. Modern physics–based energy functions (111, 112, 113) account for additional energy terms such as electrostatics and desolvation.

By fusing ePDZ to a transmembrane protein, it was possible to induce protein localization to the plasma membrane by illuminating cells with blue light. In signaling networks a single protein may interact with multiple targets, and teasing apart the different activities can be a challenge. The simplest approach is to treat the binding and activating domains of a signaling protein as independent modules that can be mixed and matched.

However, when he returned later he saw that tape had been reapplied. This caused him to call the authorities, who then caught and arrested everyone. Other reports, including from the Nixon Library and History.com, mention that there were at least two break-ins — the planting of the failed bugs and the attempt to fix them was when they all were caught. On the second attempt, the entire team goes in together until James W. McCord Jr. (Toby Huss) separates from them and runs into two security guards.

Liddy runs upstairs, grabs a gun, and jumps from a second-floor window to surprise and terrorize the egg assailant while Hitler barks. Despite the unflinching physicality Theroux brings to his role, this is not funny. Even if it really happened, it feels stupid to watch it.
After failing upward, the unlikely pair lands on the Committee to Re-Elect the President, plotting several unbelievable covert ops – including bugging the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex. Proving that fact is sometimes stranger than fiction, White House Plumbers sheds light on the lesser-known series of events that led to one of the greatest political scandals in American history. Liddy’s notorious plot to spy on the Democratic National Committee, which led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in August 1974, is satirically featured in the new HBO limited series White House Plumbers. Justin Theroux stars as Liddy, and Woody Harrelson plays his co-conspirator E. The real life Liddy and Hunt were part of a special White House unit, informally known as the Plumbers, whose job was to prevent or respond to leaks of classified information. There were two operations that night, with one team staying to break into the DNC and another attempting to break into Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern's campaign offices.
And from that point forward, the Hunts are forbidden from answering the telephone. The soundtrack of their lives will be the interminable shrill of the family landline. This email will be used to sign into all New York sites.
It turns out that Howard’s been sending out notes on White House stationery, including to the flirty flight attendant who he met on the way home from the Ellsberg break-in. I think the threat is that if Howard writes the book on Watergate, the Ellsberg scandal will break, too? I’m not entirely sure, but seeing as the book seems like a TERRIBLE idea, I guess it’s just as well!
This five-part limited series imagines the behind-the-scenes story of how Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect… and their families along with it. Chronicling actions on the ground, this satirical drama begins in 1971 when the White House hires Hunt and Liddy, former CIA and FBI, respectively, to investigate the Pentagon Papers leak.
For McCord, it turns out, politics was always a job. For Howard, who’s since been fired by the PR firm, too, it remains a religion. In the end, the Cubans completely trash the doctor’s office but still don’t find the file. Not that it matters — the LAPD improbably attributes the crime to drug-seeking junkies, and Nixon’s people approve of Gordon and Howard’s tactics even if they didn’t get results this time around.

Until the death of Sarah Cooper Hewitt, the management of the museum was handled by the Hewitt sisters as directors. Following Sarah's death in 1930, the trustees of the Cooper Union appointed a board of four directors, with Constance P. Hare as chair, to administer the Museum. Offering creative approaches to textile waste, this exhibition presents the work of three designers thinking through sustainability. Nowhere is this clearer than the Immersion Room, where you can experience, in virtual situ, every wallcovering in the Cooper Hewitt’s collection. Just bring up one of the wallpapers on the interactive table, push a button, and—voila! —digital projections transform the walls of the room with patterns that can be adjusted or customized.
Zuzek was a staff designer for Key West Hand Print Fabrics, where Lilly Pulitzer sourced most of her fabrics between 1962 and 1985. Textile
The Cooper-Hewitt was the first Smithsonian museum to be located outside of Washington, DC. In 1970, the museum moved into its present home, the Carnegie Mansion, which was renovated and reopened to the public in 1976. In addition to exhibits, the museum hosts design competitions, such as the National Design Awards and offers a wide array of educational programs, including a masters degree program with Parsons The New School for Design since 1982.

The Parsons School of Design, in partnership with Cooper Hewitt, offers an accredited Master’s Program in the History of Design and Curatorial Studies located on the museum campus. After the death of her husband Alvin Lustig, Elaine Lustig Cohen (American, 1927–2016) took the reins of his graphic design business. Aliki van der Kruijs (Dutch, born 1984) has a studio in The Hague, the Netherlands and works on self-initiated projects, collaborations, and commissions that juxtapose her interdisciplinary background in applied art. Interested in the relationship between humans and nature, she has invented a special technique to record the falling of raindrops on textiles and porcelain. Winner of the 2023 National Design Award for Landscape Architecture, Kongjian Yu is a globally recognized landscape designer, founder of Turenscape, and a founder of Peking University College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. In this talk, Yu discusses his work and how his landscape architecture methods and ideas can help mitigate climate events such as flash floods, superstorms, and tidal surges.
Cohen fulfilled numerous commissions before opening the bookstore and gallery Ex Libris with her second husband, Arthur Cohen. Accomplished weaver Dorothy Wright Liebes (American, 1897–1972) is often credited as a vital part of the California Modernist movement, and was once one of the most well-known designers in the United States. Liebes was a sharp businesswoman who believed mass-produced textiles could reach wider audiences while retaining a handwoven appearance. She began designing book covers in the late 1880s and quickly became one of the most sought-after artists in the field. Greiman’s transmedia approach to design juxtaposes typography, photography, and other elements. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Althea McNish (British, 1924–2020) moved to London and studied textile design at the Royal College of Arts. Known for her unprecedented combinations of patterns and colors, McNish helped introduce the Caribbean aesthetic to an international audience. A prominent artist of the Arts and Crafts movement, Alice Cordelia Morse (American, 1863–1961) started her career as a glass painter for the firm of Louis C. Tiffany before returning to The Cooper Union for postgraduate training in art and design.
American textile designer, weaver, and color authority Dorothy Liebes (1897–1972) had a profound influence across design fields, helping to shape American tastes in areas from interiors and transportation to industrial design, fashion, and film. The “Liebes Look”—which combined vivid color, lush texture, and often a glint of metallic—became inextricably linked with the American modern aesthetic. After the arrests at the Watergate, Dorothy emerges as a hero to Howie’s disgraced band of political criminals, securing payouts from Nixon’s dubious cronies and flying across the country to collect and distribute them. By the end of the episode, though, the mother of four is gone — the death of the series’ most thoughtful character reduced to a jump scare. HBO's NEWEST limited series is a reimagining of the Watergate scandal from the perspective of two of Nixon's most trusted men. Starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux, the show follows E. The two men were part of the White House Special Investigation Unit (nicknamed the White House Plumbers, among other names) and tasked with either stopping or managing leaks of classified information. While at first glance that may all seem above board, in practice the job looked more like breaking into people's offices and rooting through their papers.
Who is Frank Wills?
These names correspond to the faces of the men on which our story turns. Remember this pivotal date, the date history was made. G. Gordon Liddy served 52 months in prison for his role in organizing the break-ins at the center of the Watergate scandal in May and June 1972. But instead of dooming the former FBI agent turned political operative to obscurity, the misconduct only seemed to boost Liddy’s star power in the decades that followed. Naftali said the second attempt had them bug an empty conference room; the show had them bug a secretary while the bugs on more prominent figures were not working properly.

Unfortunately, two of Hunt’s kids — Lisa and Howard Saint John — are at the club that same night. I guess this is where rich kids of the Washington metro area smoked weed before there were shopping malls. Honestly, Turner plays Dita with such dark humor that it feels like Howard probably didn’t even need to bother with the Christmas bonus bribe. She would have lied to Ted Kennedy’s limo-liberal face in exchange for the carton of cigs Hunt smuggles into the hospital for her. Hell, she probably would have done it for the sheer thrill. But it’s in these scenes that we see a glimmer of the CIA agent that Howard may have been once upon a time.

The Bozo Brothers are moved off the White House roster and onto the payroll of CREEP. Now, Gordon and Howard are in the crucial business of keeping Nixon president by whatever means necessary. “You impressed the right people,” Dean tells the boys just after Nixon fires Krogh for being unable to stomach the darker electoral arts. He gives them a million dollars to put toward espionage and sabotage, electronic surveillance, and better walkie-talkies. It’s so much money that the Plumbers absolutely should have sprung for the full suite of lock-picking tools, but like the show’s cold open itself, I’m jumping too far ahead. Judy Greer as Fran Liddy Judy plays Fran, Liddy’s unflappable wife who has misplaced faith in her husband’s intelligence and abilities.
He would parlay his role in the scandal for a brief bit of fame, including starring as himself in the Oscar-winning movie All the President's Men about the Watergate scandal. Unfortunately, his brief time in the sun would not last, and he would struggle for the rest of his life before dying at the age of 52 in 2000. Britannica, meanwhile, notes there was a failed attempt to break into McGovern's campaign headquarters, but there is no reference that this was paired with a fourth attempt to get into the DNC offices at the Watergate. But how much of what was shown in the episode was fact and how much was fiction? We're breaking that down right here, including the number of times the burglars got into the Watergate and the role that Frank Wills played in their arrest.

The first episode of White House Plumbers premieres Monday, May 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, with four additional episodes airing weekly on Monday nights. Liddy acted in 46 episodes of 18 Wheels of Justice from 2000 to 2001 and also had guest roles in the TV shows Airwolf, The Highwayman, and an adaptation of the Encyclopedia Brown book series. He had 20 acting credits according to IMDb and often played nefarious television characters, such as Captain William Maynard on Miami Vice in 1985 and 1986 and Carl Strickland in a 1988 episode of MacGyver.

For Mitchell, it’s a felony bribery scandal big enough to sink another man’s presidency; for Hunt and Liddy, it’s a golden opportunity if they can figure out how to seize it without making a bigger, blundering mess of things. For his part, Howard continues to emerge as the “brains” of the operation. He thinks of every little detail, yet he thinks of nothing. He rents a banquet hall in the Watergate basement to justify the Plumbers’ presence in the building, but he doesn’t bother to recon the lock they’ll need to pick in order to leave said banquet hall. He recruits the right guys, but they never have the right tools.

This isn’t about America or even about Nixon; it’s about jostling for position in the upcoming feeding frenzy. It’s about heedlessly chasing former glory (real or imagined) because if you can’t be Oval Office adjacent, you may as well be in a square prison cell. A key figure in the arrest of the Watergate burglars was Frank Wills, a security guard at the hotel/office building complex. In the show, we see Wills (Eddie K. Robinson) have his first interaction with Hunt and the others during their first break-in attempt, but he thinks nothing of it. However, as they continue to try their subsequent break-ins, Wills is often noticing odd things that raise his alarm. It all culminates when he notices a door to the building has had tape put over the latch in order to prevent it from locking.
But while Hunt’s beginning to doubt Nixon’s loyalty, G. Dean he’s willing to be assassinated for the president — an event that seems unlikely to deflect suspicion from the campaign, but it’s the thought that counts. The first night Gordon and Howard and their band of Cuban brothers attempt a Watergate break-in, the posse divides and doesn’t conquer. After a kickoff dinner, one team is dispatched to George McGovern’s presidential-campaign office, where Gordon’s “man on the inside” gets cold feet and denies them entry and nary a remote listening device is planted. Why did these men need to visit the Watergate at all on the evening in question? After the scandal became public, Wills left his job at the Watergate; the blog says that he did not feel he was given proper compensation (raise and a promotion) for helping to discover the burglary.
Gordon Liddy are tasked with investigating the Pentagon Papers leak, gathering a team of Cubans -- all Bay of Pigs veterans -- to infiltrate whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Lisa and Howard Saint John embarrass their parents, first by greeting the Liddys high as kites and then by making a larger, louder scene. The emotionally fragile Lisa is playing indignant (and high) white savior to a Black country-club employee who says he didn’t even hear whatever racist attack from another club member that Lisa is protesting on his behalf. But just when it seems Lisa is persuaded to go home, Howard reignites the scene by forcing her to apologize, which of course ends in her calling the guy a “pig” even more vociferously than she started. The men are, under no circumstances, to murder any commies. But they are given the go-ahead to bug DNC headquarters and $250,000 to put toward the nefarious scheme. In Scrabble parlance, he’s finally scored his bingo. He shared these and other candid anecdotes in one of his first major projects out of prison, a 1980 autobiography titled Will that sold more than one million copies and was adapted into a 1982 made-for-TV movie starring Robert Conrad.
When he isn’t writing dreadful spy novels under a pseudonym, Hunt is stuck in a dead-end PR job after getting forced out of the CIA. He goes home to wife Dorothy (Lena Headey), who has a more decorated espionage past of her own, and an assortment of screwed up kids. An FBI wash-out, Liddy has a reputation for eccentricity and an unnervingly chipper, well-behaved family fronted by wife Fran (Judy Greer). The two men are brought together by Bud Krogh (Rich Sommer) and tasked with investigating the leak of the Pentagon Papers. Their conversation is set to somber music, but it’s not actually sad.
And, of course, the White House Plumbers' most famous act was the Watergate Scandal. In another scene from Papa Knows Best, Howard knocks down the bathroom door after Lisa locks herself inside, a speedy alternative to coaxing her out with love or even bothering to comfort his worried wife. And it’s not just that Howard is a short-tempered papa when he’s down. He’s a shitty dad in his third at-bat, right after his big win with Dita Beard. There are bad behaviors to correct and those to ignore. Sometimes you just have to let someone escape a tricky situation without a public apology.
In a story glutted with broad caricatures, Hunt and Liddy are maybe the broadest and perhaps the least inherently sympathetic. “The Writer’s Wife” picks up six months earlier, in the closing moments of episode three. Jim McCord and the Cubans have just been arrested by hippie cops, whose unexpected hippie attire I assumed would be explained this week but appears to have been forgotten.
The overall effect of the unnecessary tagging — despite the ASMR satisfaction of the typewriter punches that accompany it — is chaos. Surely one of the hallmarks of a successful TV show is the ability to convey a sense of time and place and character without me having to jot it all down in my Ghostwriter notebook. For the previous break-in attempts, McCord posed as a Watergate delivery man during the day and taped open a back door for his team of crackpot intelligencers to utilize later. But on this day, a security guard called Frank Wills — who, fun fact, plays himself in All the President’s Men — noticed and removed the masking tape.
